There are three major themes that support our investment thesis for Europe’s Future of Work: consumerization of the company, distributed and hybrid work, and the great resignation and resetting priorities. As demographics shift and we experience more and more different methods of working, employee preferences remain a persistent driver across these themes. When it comes to developing global category-defining firms, we believe that European entrepreneurs have a distinct advantage. This is because of the European ecosystem’s unique qualities, as well as their prior experience building organisations across distributed, multilingual, and multicultural teams.

The Enterprise is Becoming More like a Consumer

From the time they wake up until they go to bed, the average consumer is constantly interacting with some form of technological device. When COVID struck, we saw our European portfolio firms adapt quickly to new ways of working because many of their founders have expertise building across remote hubs and employing inclusive teams across languages and cultures. We’ve observed a shift away from a single office over the past few years, but COVID helped to greatly speed the trend to hybrid work by compelling organisations to implement remote and hybrid work nearly immediately. Another statistic from the UK was that over a quarter of workers are actively looking for new employment.

The Great Resignation has shifted the balance of power from management to employees, highlighting the importance of workplace equality, wellbeing, and inclusivity.
